FAQs

What can I expect on my first visit?

We allocate one hour for the initial assessment and evaluation. This allows for a full detailed history and examination, a discussion of the examination findings and outline of the treatment plan proposed. We usually commence treatment on the first appointment and then plan for subsequent reviews (which are usually half hourly appointments) at a time that is convenient for you and fits in with the treatment plan agreed.

What does physiotherapy assessment involve?

Physiotherapy assessment starts with a detailed history of all relevant medical facts together with review of any x-rays or MRI scans GP and consultant reports which you may have received. It is very important that this information is a discussed because it can influence the type of treatment that are undertaken all may indicate if on the tests are required. Because gathering this information is so important in planning treatment and determining prognosis we allow a lot of time at the initial assessment for this because it forms the basis for the management plan.

The second part of the assessment involves physical examination. This typically involves a visual assessment of the area in question (obviously you need to dress appropriately in order to allow for inspection). We have a contingency supply of shorts and vests for emergencies.

The physiotherapists will then conduct a series of tests asking you for information and feedback as they are performed. These tests typically involve looking at movement, testing muscle function, manually examining the problem area, and a battery of functional tests to assess current status.

All of this information is then evaluated and a report of the findings is disclosed with you. From there the treatment options available, the number of treatments required and the expected outcome will be discussed.

How long does treatment take?

The initial assessment lasts for one hour.

Subsequent appointments for musculoskeletal problems are usually half an hour unless specific arrangements are made otherwise.

For neurological rehabilitation most follow up appointments are also one hour depending on the nature of the condition.

How many treatments do I need?

The number of treatments required very much depends on the severity and type of condition. Usually we can get a clear indication after the initial assessment and treatment what the likely time course for recovery is.

In cases where the condition has been long standing with lots of different treatment is important to establish the prognosis and whether it is possible to resolve completely. It is important to recognize that some conditions cannot be keep completely cured and it is a case of managing as best as possible and optimizing function to the highest possibilities available. This is our clinical philosophy and we will be absolutely transparent with you in discussing these issues. There would be no question of being forced into speculative treatment programs where the outcome is uncertain or feeding pressurized into booking appointments which you do not want. This is our promise to you.

What type of treatments do you use?

Are specialist skills are in hands-on treatment involving manipulation, mobilization, stretching, muscle strengthening, postural realignment and functional rehabilitation. This is labor-intensive work but all treatment is conducted on a one-to-one basis. We also utilize a variety of exercise equipment in our medical rehabilitation gym such as specific machines for strengthening, improving balance, working on movement patterns, sports specific motion, cardiovascular training and core stability.

Are you covered by health insurance?

All chartered physiotherapists are approved by health insurance companies e.g. VHI, Quinn and Aviva. There are many factors which influence the remuneration for physiotherapy services at it would depend on the type of policy, the number of treatments and the total amount of medical expenses accumulated within one subscription year. We would advise that you discuss with your health insurer to determine what level of reimbursement you are entitled to. All treatment fees or settled directly with Dublin Physiotherapy at the time of treatment. Your invoices can then be submitted to your health insurer in order to receive remuneration.

Additionally you may be entitled to tax credits / reimbursement through the “Med 1” scheme for medical expenses. These forms are available at out clinic or can be downloaded from the revenue online services ROS) for submission at the end of the financial year.
