What is Specialist Physiotherapy?

In the same way that medicine has many different specialties e.g. Orthopaedics, Neurology, Rheumatology and General Practice – Physiotherapy also has these categories. Because diseases and conditions are very different the type of treatment required for a stroke is very different from low back pain, which again is very different from a sports injury to an occupational overuse problem. Because of this we group our practice into two broad sections: Musculoskeletal and Neurological rehabilitation. Musculoskeletal rehabilitation deals with all conditions involving the mechanics of the body systems from muscle strains, ligament strains and tears, arthritic problems, tendonitis and muscle pains. Neurological rehabilitation deals with conditions where the nervous system is affected either involving the brain or spinal cord with conditions such as Parkinson’s, Multiple Sclerosis, Head injuries or viral infections.
